Coenen Cruise Mode activated with Latvia MXGP rout

The Coenen brothers aced the MXGP Grand Prix of Latvia for the third weekend in a row of FIM MXGP World Championship action. The series headed into the reddish shallow sandy soil of Kegums for round eight and the meeting was significant for Red Bull KTM’s all-out dominance as Lucas and Sacha Coenen won every outing in the MXGP and MX2 classes with their KTM 450 SX-F and KTM 250 SX-F.

Highlights and key moments from Kegums:

  • Lucas Coenen doubles his MXGP world championship advantage thanks to a 1-1-1 score in Latvia for his second successive win and fourth of 2026
  • Sacha Coenen posts the same results at Kegums and also increases his margin at the top of MX2. The Belgian now two victories and five podium appearances this term
  • The brothers owned both of their Qualification Heats on Saturday for the third time this season but controlled both of their classes on Sunday for the first time this campaign
  • Andrea Adamo ranks P6 in MXGP while Simon Laengenfelder rues a second moto crash and a painful back to place 13th overall in MX2

MXGP moved from France to Germany and then to Latvia to complete the first of three ‘triple header’ events on the 2026 schedule. Kegums has been the home of the Grand Prix in the country for almost two decades and hosted the 2014 Motocross of Nations. The layout is mostly flat, with only two sections of elevation but with a soft, sandy surface that gets rough and rippled. Decent weather conditions across the weekend meant dry and speedy terrain. Red Bull KTM came to the site close to the capital city of Riga with red plates in both MXGP and MX2 classes thanks to Lucas and Sacha Coenen and with a total of 7 victories by three of their four riders so far.

On Saturday Lucas passed Jeffrey Herlings to convincingly win the MXGP Qualification Heat for the third time this year and repeated the triumph clocked by Sacha in MX2 less than an hour earlier. Andrea Adamo rode to P9 and Simon Laengenfelder achieved P3 for the same start positions for the next day.

Sunday’s two 30 minute and 2-lap motos per class were run under bright skies. Lucas rode clear and relatively undisturbed in both outings for his fourth 1-1 in 2026, taking his checkered flag haul to 10 from 16. He has one other podium trophy aside from his four winners’ garlands and the consistency has helped to a championship margin of 62 points. Andrea took two solid top ten results again; going 8-6 for 6th on the day.

In MX2 Sacha boosted his holeshot tally to ten and escaped from the pack on both occasions. It was his second 1-1 after initially sweeping the Grand Prix of Trentino and also a third success at Kegums. Simon could not match the prolificacy from the start gate. The world champion was 5th in the first moto but retired from the second after a crash while over-jumping, running of the track and suffering an impact to his lower back. Sacha is 37 points ahead of the German.

Latvia drew the EMX250 (round 6 of 12) and EMX125 European Championships (round 6 of 10) into the Kegums sand. Gabriel SS24 KTM’s Gyan Doensen recorded a 3rd place finish overall with the KTM 250 SX-F (his second rostrum of the year) while Moritz Ernecker and Ricardo Bauer stood 1st and 3rd with the KTM 125 SX.

MXGP heads into a free weekend before another triple header in Italy, Portugal and South Africa to take the series into July. The next race is the Italian Grand Prix on June 21st and a return to the compact hardpacked course of Montevarchi for the first time in twenty years.

Lucas Coenen, 1st and 1st for 1st overall in MXGP: “Amazing! I was thinking ‘Sacha did it, so now it is on me’. I want to thank the team because they worked their asses off. A bit of history today. I was just controlling the second moto because the track was tricky. I tried to make good laps and be smart. Super-pumped, so let’s go and enjoy the USA now.”

Andrea Adamo, 8th and 6th for 6th overall in MXGP: “A solid one. Nothing special. We had the first podium last weekend but not this time. I had some stomach issues but that’s not an excuse. I was riding good but I think I could have been better. We always aim for the top five or to try and finish as close as possible…so 6th is not too bad. We now have two weeks for some rest and training before Montevarchi.”

Sacha Coenen, 1st and 1st for 1st overall in MX2: No words! Really nice to win motos the same weekend as my brother. This is the third time I win here. I like this track; it suits me even if you have to be careful in some places. Good starts were the key. I’m super-pumped to have won all three motos. Let’s keep it going.”

Simon Laengenfelder, 5th and DNF for 13th overall in MX2: “A tricky weekend. I hoped to turn things around. It was a nice feeling to holeshot the Quali race but it was not easy after that. Top three, and I wanted the same after a bad start in the first moto today but unfortunately on those last laps things came apart and I was 5th. We made some changes to the bike and I felt good for the second moto: a great jump from the gate but a bad first corner! I was 12th and moved up and when I jumped too far I went sideways and off the track. I was winded for a bit and hurt my back…but it seems OK now. We should be fine for Montevarchi.”
