KTM entered the premier MotoGP category with the newly developed KTM RC16 in 2017 and has since been developing its machine in an arena that demands the highest technical know-how. KTM has made huge steps forwards in its short time in the class and has achieved a number of front row qualifying positions as well as a podium finish. KTM continues with a four-rider line-up in 2020; Pol Espargaró and Brad Binder in the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team along with Miguel Oliveira and Iker Lecuona in the Red Bull KTM Tech3 outfit. MotoGP Legend Dani Pedrosa and Mika Kallio ensure a deeply experienced test team.
Following a strong start to the season for KTM, Binder clinched a historic first MotoGP victory for the Austrian manufacturer in only his third premier-class appearance, which took place in Brno, Czech Republic. The rookie rode an incredible race aboard his KTM RC16, demonstrating the huge steps forward that KTM has made for its fourth season in the category. The South African racer has now enjoyed success with KTM in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP classes.
KTM has one of the most extensive networks operating through MotoGP. The manufacturer pushes potential new and exciting athletes through a concept entitled the ‘KTM GP Academy’. Moto3 is the foundation, and KTM boasts three Moto3 FIM World Championships in the class – two achieved with help from long-term partner Red Bull KTM Ajo – and another with a customer version of the KTM RC4 in 2013. In 2020 Raúl Fernández and Kaito Toba – joined by Red Bull KTM Tech3 duo Ayumu Sasaki and Deniz Öncü - are two of 15 KTM RC4 riders aiming for glory in Moto3. Jorge Martín and Tetsuta Nagashima maintain fast and competitive links for Red Bull KTM Ajo in Moto2.
Since 2007 the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup has been a launchpad for a number of MotoGP careers. KTM has also pledged its support to the entry-level Northern Talent Cup meaning the KTM GP Academy has two important and high-profile first steps for finding, supporting and developing the MotoGP stars of tomorrow.
