Laengenfelder wins 2025 MX2 World Championship after dramatic Australian Grand Prix

Simon Laengenfelder has won the 2025 FIM MX2 Motocross World Championship after finishing 2nd at a busy, hot and storm-hit Hidden Valley Motorsports Complex for the Grand Prix of Australia and the final round of the season. The 21-year-old became the second German #1 in the MX2 class for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and the first for his country in FIM motocross competition since 2011. Lucas Coenen ruled the MXGP division in Darwin and the 18-year-old caps an outstanding and record-breaking debut year in the premier class as runner-up.

MXGP jetted from a sweltering Chinese Grand Prix to another humid and challenging tropical climate: this time in Australia’s northern territories and to the confines of the new Hidden Valley Motorsports motocross circuit. The track was clay-based, sandy and hard-packed in sections and suitably spectacular. The complex was surrounded by a large attendance as the world championship arrived back in the country for the first time since 2001.

Red Bull KTM still had chances of MXGP and MX2 titles in Australia. Lucas Coenen faced a 47-point deficit with 60 points on offer and Simon Laengenfelder led defending #1 Kay De Wolf by 16 points in MX2. The team had Jeffrey Herlings in bright form with consecutive wins in the Netherlands, Turkey and China while the MX2 trio had banked three of the last four rounds. The Grand Prix began on Saturday with Coenen escaping to win the qualification heat while Herlings was P7. In the MX2 class Sacha Coenen, Laengenfelder and Andrea Adamo were P2, P4 and P5 respectively.

On Sunday the Grand Prix was severely affected by weather. The first motos took place in dry conditions and in front of a bustling crowd. Coenen repeated his authority from Saturday and, after his 13th holeshot of the term, eased to his fourteenth moto victory of the season, with Herlings in 2nd place. 4th position for Romain Febvre meant that Coenen solidified his position as official runner-up for the year. In MX2 there was drama as Laengenfelder clashed with title rival De Wolf but still finished P2. Adamo was P6 and Coenen fell on his way to P13. The young Belgian was determined to end 2025 in a more positive fashion in the second moto, and seized his seventeenth holeshot. Laengenfelder again hit the soil in the first laps and his world title seemed under threat but then a tropical storm washed through the area and flooded the track. Laengenfelder kept going through the deluge and when the red flag was shown he was 6th for P2 overall, and placed both hands on the gold number plate. Adamo had already retired and ranked 11th on the day (for the bronze medal in the championship) while Coenen’s recovery allowed him to sign-off his second GP term with P4 and the same standing in the points table

The track state forced the second MXGP moto to be scrapped. Therefore, Lucas Coenen increased his GP win column number to five and 13 podiums while Herlings pulled a curtain on 2025 with his sixth rostrum and fourth trophy in a row, having already won five GPs in fifteen appearances.

2025 has involved 20 Grands Prix, 40 motos (39 in MXGP) and 20 Qualification Heats. In the MXGP category, with the KTM 450 SX-F, Red Bull KTM have aced 10 GPs, 22 moto wins and 12 Quali races. Coenen and Herlings have tallied 19 podium finishes for the year. In MX2, with the KTM 250SX-F, Red Bull KTM have filled three of the top four final championship slots. The team have won 12 GPs, clinched 23 motos and 9 qualification races. Adamo, Coenen and Laengenfelder captured 34 trophies. On 12 occasions there was more than one Red Bull KTM rider on the podium and the trio lined all three steps at the Grands Prix of France and China. Red Bull KTM won both categories on the same day at seven GPs in 2025.

The Motocross of Nations is the traditional season closer. For the second time since 2022 it will take place on American turf and more than 30 nations will travel to the Ironman circuit near Crawfordsville on the first weekend of October. Red Bull KTM will have four of their current Grand Prix racers active in the USA.

Lucas Coenen, 1st overall in MXGP and 2nd in the championship: “Coming into this year people thought I would crash out rightaway. As an 18-year-old you hate to hear that, and you want to ignore it, but you also keep in your head. Proving people wrong was a challenge for me and I was trying to do my best and keep consistent because I know I was going against guys with a lot of experience of how to handle a championship. I kept believing in myself and never gave up and I want to thank the team and the people close to me because this 2nd position in the championship wouldn’t have been possible. I made mistakes, I made changes and I learnt a lot. Next year I will be even more ‘boosted’ and will try to get on top, like Romain did this year.”

Jeffrey Herlings, 2nd overall in MXGP and 5th in the championship: “An up-and-down weekend. I made a mistake in the first turn of the qualifying race and that meant I had to work to come back to 7th. Today, the last GP of the year, I was really motivated. A good start in 2nd and I stayed there the whole moto, four seconds behind the winner. I wanted to put all my cards on the table for the last moto but due to the heavy rain and the conditions it never came, so, P2 overall. The last five GPs have been very good to me, top two all the way. We can look back on the year in a good way, despite the injuries. P5 in the championship is still quite decent and we were very close to 4th.”

Simon Laengenfelder, 2nd and 6th for 2nd overall in MX2 and 1st in the championship: “I’ve finished 3rd three times in this championship and the last two years were tough because of two injuries. I was not ready and the others were better prepared but this year I could keep myself together. Sometimes winning can feel easy while losing is the hardest part and when you learn the most. I’m just incredibly happy that the work has paid-off. Today was crazy. It was hard to understand what was happening and I never expected this much rain here.”

Andrea Adamo, 6th and 14th for 11th overall in MX2 and 3rd in the championship: “P3 means a solid season but the only thing that really counts is winning. I felt good all season and kept fighting all season and when I had the red plate I then had two bad races: in the wrong places at the wrong moment and I lost too many points. I also didn’t make the best choices. 3rd for the year and it doesn’t feel much at the moment…but I know it’s still an achievement and many people would like this position. We’ll analyze and learn for next season.”

SECOND OVERALL FOR RED BULL KTM FACTORY RACING'S JORGE PRADO AT BUDDS CREEK NATIONAL

Round 10 of the 2026 AMA Pro Motocross Championship proved to be another successful outing for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing at Budds Creek, with Jorge Prado claiming second overall in 450MX, while Julien Beaumer earned a top-five finish in 250MX. Following his second-place result at Unadilla last weekend, Prado qualified sixth aboard his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION at the rain-affected Budds Creek National, posting a 1:56.300 lap time before racing to P3 in Moto 1. The four-time world champion started Moto 2 from second and remained firmly in contention for the victory throughout the race. He ultimately settled for a spirited third position, securing second overall and his fourth podium of the season outdoors. With one round remaining in the 2026 Pro Motocross season at next weekend's Ironman National, Prado sits fourth in the 450MX standings and is currently third in the wider SMX World Championship rankings. Jorge Prado: "My riding was pretty good today and a podium is always nice. I need to get better at dealing with traffic in those last 10 minutes, so we’ll work on that, and it will help a lot with my results. Hopefully we can get a moto win or an overall at Ironman – I like that track and am feeling really good on the bike." Four-time 450MX champion Eli Tomac set the fifth-fastest time on the combined 450MX timesheets in qualifying, before featuring toward the front of the pack from the outset in Moto 1 aboard his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION. The 33-year-old finished a solid fourth in the opening race, before a difficult start in Moto 2 left him to recover to 13th, with Tomac completing the weekend ninth overall as his late-season momentum continues to build. Eli Tomac: "We had a much better weekend, even though the overall results may not show that – I was happier with my riding. I was battling for a podium position almost the whole first moto, and then in the second moto, I just put myself in too bad of a position off the start to really get to the front. At this point, I’m just getting stronger and stronger, and I feel like I’ll be in the podium fight for Ironman and for the SMX series." Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Aaron Plessinger continued his return to Pro Motocross competition at Budds Creek, with ‘The Cowboy’ converting a strong start in Moto 1 into a 10th-place result. Plessinger completed the opening lap of Moto 2 in sixth on board his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION and eventually claimed seventh, taking P7 overall for the round in his second race back since injuring his tailbone at RedBud. Aaron Plessinger: "Budds Creek went pretty good, I'd say! It was a lot better than my last few weeks at the track – practice was alright, then it started raining, and I got excited, but it stopped just in time for the track to kind of dry out a little bit before Moto 1. We got 10th in that one, which was decent given I am racing myself back into form, and then the second one I got a really good start, before being shuffled back early. From there, I battled around seventh and stayed there the whole moto to earn seventh overall. This is solid, it's good momentum, and we'll take the positives into Ironman!" Equipped with the KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION in the 250MX Class, Beaumer qualified 10th quickest on combined times, before racing to an eighth-place finish in Moto 1 amid technical, drying track conditions. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider charged forward from outside the top 10 in Moto 2 to take an impressive fourth-place finish. His 8-4 moto scorecard earned fourth overall for the weekend, maintaining third in the 250MX standings with one round remaining. Julien Beaumer: "P4 at Budds Creek. I struggled a little bit in Moto 1, but rode more like myself in Moto 2. I had to fight from around 15th to fourth in that second moto, so happy with the progress, and we will keep building. JULIEN BEAUMER AND RED BULL KTM FACTORY RACING CONTINUE INTO THE FUTURE

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing has re-signed Julien Beaumer through the 2027 SMX World Championship and beyond, continuing together into the future following a standout campaign to date in AMA Pro Motocross this season. Since joining KTM's factory program in 2024, Beaumer has emerged as one of the most exciting young riders in the sport. The 20-year-old broke through for a first-career 250SX victory in the AMA Supercross Championship last year on his way to second in the Western Divisional standings. Despite a serious back injury ruling him out of Supercross in 2026, 'Juju' has made a remarkable return to competition outdoors and is currently positioned third in the 250MX championship after winning his maiden overall at the Spring Creek National. In a multi-year agreement, Beaumer will enter his fourth season with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing in 2027, targeting title success across the SMX World Championship – including the AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross Championships – equipped with the KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION.
