Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder finished 3rd overall for his seventh MX2 podium result of the season today through the draining sand of Lommel and the Grand Prix of Flanders. Round 14 of 2026 MXGP took place in more hot and dry conditions and a record 40,000+ crowd witnessed four tough and competitive motos in which Laengenfelder shone on the KTM 250 SX-F but Andrea Adamo also scored a bright 5th in the MXGP class on the KTM 450 SX-F.
Highlights and key moments from Lommel:
The third Grand Prix in as many weeks took MXGP from the narrow hardpack of Loket in the Czech Republic to the deep, rough sand of Lommel for Belgium’s traditional FIM Motocross World Championship date. Red Bull KTM counted on a slightly fitter Sacha Coenen (now three weeks after surgery on his right collarbone) but twin Lucas Coenen still carried too much pain from his crash at the British Grand Prix three weeks ago to climb back onboard the KTM 450 SX-F for the motos.
Lommel has hosted Grand Prix and Motocross of Nations since the 1990s and is unique for the terrain and the physical, technical and mechanical challenge it presents. The track is well known among the motocross elite however as a dependable ‘all weather’ training and testing site.
Simon Laengenfelder earned the best result, the most points and the highest starting place in the gate after finishing 2nd in the MX2 Saturday Qualification Heat. Andrea Adamo scooped a decent 3rd place in the MXGP outing for a fourth top-three Saturday ranking in his rookie season.
On Sunday Andrea made a top three start in the first moto and then set his rhythm to come home in P6. In the second moto the Italian was just inside the top ten when a slip on lap four cost a few positions but he worked hard and rode superbly in the sand to return to P5 and stamped 5th overall.
In MX2 Laengenfelder started well and established a firm pace in the top four during the formative stages of the opening race. The German maintained his speed to cross the line in P2. Later in the afternoon Simon was again prominent as one of the leaders and managed his energy to score P3 for the trip to the rostrum. The reigning world champion is 70 points from the red plate.
Sacha Coenen was limited by a first lap crash in the opening moto that dropped him out of the top twenty. The Belgian charged all the way back to P6. He then kept steady and consistent for more championship points and P7 in the second moto. Sacha is P2 in the standings with a 47-point deficit.
After three Grands Prix in a row, MXGP now takes a breather ahead of a coming double header and more diverse circuits. The stony hardpack of Uddevalla will entertain the Grand Prix of Sweden next on August 15-16 and is then followed by the sand of Motorsportpark Gelderland Midden in Arnhem for the Grand Prix of the Netherlands.
Andrea Adamo, 6th and 5th for 5th overall in MXGP: “After the Quali race yesterday I have to say I was expecting a little bit more today. I didn’t have the best feeling in the first moto and that meant I went into the second not completely on-point. A bad start, a crash also, and from then on I managed to get back to P5 with a good rhythm. I chased and passed the guys ahead of me quite easily. 5th overall in Lommel is better than just ‘good enough’. A break next week then hardpack in Sweden and overseas to the last Grands Prix. It will go quickly but I’m looking forward to it.”
Simon Laengenfelder, 2nd and 3rd for 3rd overall in MX2: “Three consistent motos and without any big mistakes – which is already better than last weekend! - and I’m happy about that. Coming away with a podium is also positive because we all know Lommel is a tough GP. A good way to bounce back from Loket and Sweden next, which is a cool one.”
Sacha Coenen, 6th and 7th for 6th overall in MX2: “A difficult weekend. I was not feeling 100% and was getting quite tired. We just need to accept the 6-7 even if I am not so happy with the result. I brought some good points home and I hope in two weeks we can be back going for the win. Battling for the championship again is now key.”
Lucas Coenen, DNS: “I was able to ride in practice but couldn’t really manage more than two laps; too much pain. We did some scans and there is more evaluation coming on Wednesday; when we’ll know more about the future.”
