Top four in Trentino MXGP for Coenen as Adamo celebrates MX2 victory for the second time in 2025

The Grand Prix of Trentino was the second successive Italian date for MXGP and the fifth round of 20 in the 2025. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing moved to the picturesque hardpack of Pietramurata close to Lake Garda and Lucas Coenen almost made the MXGP rostrum with 4th place as Andrea Adamo excelled across the rippled bumps to stand on the top of the MX2 podium.

The second of three back-to-back Grands Prix pulled MXGP to northern Italy. The FIM world championship found changeable spring weather at the Pietramurata circuit set on the initial slopes of the Dolomite Mountains. The shallow loose dirt was powdery, and hid tough, small bumps while the layout was tight and tricky for overtaking.

On Saturday Simon Laengenfelder scored 3rd in the MX2 Qualifying race with the KTM 250 SX-F. Sacha Coenen was 11th with Andrea Adamo in 14th. Lucas Coenen and Jeffrey Herlings were 11th and 22nd in MXGP. Sunday provided wet and cloudy conditions but the venue at Arco di Trento was busy with fans packed into the compact spectator zones. Fast starts were critical for early moto pace and in the first race Coenen surged into the top four and rode consistently to secure 3rd. Herlings had to work for a steady 10th (his second successive top ten classification since making his competitive return to MXGP). Later in the afternoon Coenen was tussling for 2nd place deep into the second moto but a tumble dropped him out of play for the podium and down to a lonely 6th; meaning 4th on the day. Herlings notched 11th for 9th overall.

The first MX2 moto was slick and slimy until the track developed some dry lines and patches and formed deep ruts. Adamo started well, charged to 2nd and was only bumped to 3rd by reigning world champion Kay De Wolf in the final few corners. Laengenfelder and Coenen and didn’t have the best launches (the German tangling with another rider out of the gate and was last into the opening turn) but Simon fought back to an impressive 7th and the Belgian logged 9th. Adamo, who celebrated his first career win at Trentino in 2023, bided his time behind holeshotter Sacha Coenen in the second moto and when the Belgian slipped out of the lead in the first laps the Italian had a clear track. The calm was momentary as the former world champion ran into backmarkers late on, and Thibault Benistant was able to close and pass the #80. Still, 2nd was sufficient for Adamo’s second victory of the season and second from the last three rounds. Coenen was 7th for the same result overall. Four places ahead was a conservative Laengenfelder whose technique and application helped him to 3rd and therefore  4th overall.

The first quarter of the championship has been run, and Red Bull KTM holds P4 in the MXGP standings thanks to Coenen. Laengenfelder is highest placed in the MX2 table with P2 but Adamo is only six points behind in P3 and Coenen is P6. Austrian technology fill five of the first six positions in the series.

The Trentino Grand Prix featured a European Championship double bill for the KTM MXGP Academy. The Racestore KTM Factory Rookies team watched Aron Katona and Nicolo Alvisi finish 4th and 6th overall with the KTM 125 SX as Katona still leads the series. Gyan Doensen was 8th on the final scorecard in EMX250 with the Gabriel SS24 KTM Factory Juniors KTM 250 SX-F and recorded a decent 3rd place in the second moto.

The soft, rutty mud and grassy climes of Frauenfeld near Zurich will stage the sixth round of MXGP next weekend. The Easter holiday schedule means an unusual agenda of the Saturday qualifying race being followed by the Grand Prix motos on Monday.

 

Lucas Coenen, 3rd and 6th for 4th overall in MXGP: “I didn’t feel so good on Saturday and the incident with the gate in the Heat race meant I had to ride from last to 11th. I knew I needed good starts today but couldn’t turn to the inside as much as I wanted. 3rd was good in the first moto though and then I was chasing for 2nd in the next race and thought I saw my opportunity. I made a small mistake and had to pick up for 6th. I’m mad…but we’ll get over it.”

Jeffrey Herlings, 10th and 11th for 9th overall in MXGP: “10-11 and 9: not too bad for an old man who has only been on the bike a couple of weeks. We’ll keep working and trying to build from here. We’ll wait and see what we can do in Switzerland now. I just want to give my best every weekend

Andrea Adamo, 3rd and 2nd for 1st overall in MX2: “Amazing! A solid day but again, we had issues with the lappers. It was a bummer not to win the second moto and after putting in a solid gap when I was in the lead. Anyway…I’m super-happy to win the GP that’s the most important thing and to give the fans what they deserved for their support. I hope we can keep this momentum now. We are doing good.”

Simon Laengenfelder, 7th and 3rd for 4th overall in MX2: “I finished 3rd on Saturday but the track was really difficult, lots of square edges but also soft patches. It wasn’t easy. Then unfortunately in the first race I didn’t have a great start and struggled to pass. I could only get back to 7th. In the second race I started in 3rd and finished in 3rd! Just missed the podium. We are there…we just need consistent starts.”

Sacha Coenen, 9th and 7th for 7th overall in MX2: “I didn’t have a great feeling in practice on the track but it was getting better and better as the GP went on. I had a really bad start in the first moto! But I made a lot of passes as fast as I could. I got up to 8th but then made a mistake near the end and had to take 9th. A holeshot in the second moto, and that was almost the biggest part of the job. I led for five laps and had a seven second lead but I got kicked-off from a bump and didn’t have the strength to hold the front-end. So, not the weekend we were expecting…but we did our best and we should have been on the podium. We’ll work to be 100% for Switzerland.”

THIRD AT SPRING CREEK NATIONAL HAS CHASE SEXTON BACK ON 450MX PODIUM

Third overall in Round 7 of the 2025 AMA Pro Motocross Championship at the Spring Creek National continued Chase Sexton’s successful return to racing in the mid-stages of the 450MX season, with the defending champion posting a consistent 3-3 scorecard across the pair of premier class motos. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider powered his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION to sixth during the morning’s qualifying sessions, before charging to a solid P3 result in Moto 1 after featuring toward the front of the field on what was a high-speed Millville circuit this weekend. Faced with a deteriorating track later in the afternoon, the number 1 posted another measured performance in Moto 2, recording another third-place result, and continuing to build back into form as the series develops. Chase Sexton: "I didn’t have a lot of expectations coming back during the season. I think speed-wise, especially my first few laps, were better today than at RedBud, but we still have a lot of work to do. I enjoy Washougal, as well as the next few tracks coming up, so we’ll keep aiming to improve and get closer toward the battle at the front." 450MX teammate Aaron Plessinger entered today still feeling the effects of the illness he experienced at the previous round. Still, he qualified fourth onboard his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION, before running as high as second in Moto 1. Despite displaying that impressive speed, a depleted Plessinger would ultimately be forced to retire from the race and elected to withdraw from Moto 2. Equipped with the KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION, two-time MX2 World Champion Tom Vialle qualified seventh, but found himself outside of the top 10 during the early stages of Moto 1. A convincing charge would follow, eventually claiming sixth position, before an early fall in Moto 2 left the Frenchman with a DNF and 14th overall for the round. Ian Harrison, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager: "Practice in Millville went well for us and looked a little better than last week, but then it become more difficult in relation to Tom and Aaron. Tom actually had a good first moto, he recovered from a mediocre start all the way back to sixth place, which was nice. Then in the 450 moto, it was a good race for Chase, and Aaron was up there, but definitely had some issues and he had to retire, so we will look into this and find out what we can do to help him. Second moto in the 250s was tough – we lost Tom in the whoops at the back, and that was the end of his day. We went into the second 450 moto with Chase, and he had a good six laps before losing touch with the leaders, but I feel like we are making progress there, and I think we can improve on this by next week." JULIEN BEAUMER TO SIT OUT UPCOMING SPRING CREEK AND WASHOUGAL NATIONALS

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Julien Beaumer will sit out the next two rounds of the 2025 Pro Motocross Championship, aiming to regain 100 percent fitness with a goal of returning for Round 9 at Ironman Raceway in mid-August. Beaumer has been experiencing ongoing effects from his heavy crash during the second 250MX moto at High Point last month, with both the 19-year-old and the team collectively making the decision to miss the upcoming Spring Creek and Washougal Nationals. With an additional two-week break in the series scheduled following Washougal, it's anticipated that Beaumer will benefit from that extended time on the sidelines before completing the final three rounds of the outdoors at Ironman Raceway, Unadilla, and Budds Creek onboard his KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION. After finishing inside the top-five at the opening two rounds of the Pro Motocross season, Beaumer has faced adversity in the following races. After qualifying P5 at RedBud on Saturday, he recorded 16-13 moto finishes for 16th overall and is currently ranked 13th in the championship standings. Ian Harrison, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager: "The last few weeks we noticed Julien just seemed to be off his game and, after digging a bit deeper into his issues and in consultation with a doctor, it seems he is likely having lingering effects from his crash at Round 4 of the series. As our riders' health and safety is always our number one priority, we are taking the doctor’s advice and decided that at this point in time Julien will sit out both the Millville and Washougal rounds."

DEFENDING 450MX CHAMPION CHASE SEXTON FINISHES FIFTH IN REDBUD RETURN

Defending 450MX Champion Chase Sexton made a successful return to racing during Round 6 of the 2025 AMA Pro Motocross Championship at the RedBud National, with the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider scoring a top-five finish overall after showcasing front-running speed throughout the day. In what is considered his home race on the schedule, Sexton powered his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION – which was sporting a unique livery in celebration of the 4th of July weekend – to the eighth fastest qualifying time, with RedBud marking his first appearance since exiting the Fox Raceway season-opener. After scoring a P5 finish in Moto 1 at the iconic Michigan circuit, Sexton charged toward the front of the field in Moto 2, running as high as second place before a late mishap saw him finish fourth. Fifth overall was a convincing result upon return and a solid foundation to build from in the second half of the season. Chase Sexton: "First race back at RedBud wasn't great results-wise, but I didn't really expect a whole lot coming into the round. Second moto, I was pleasantly surprised that even if I wasn't riding great, that my speed was still pretty good. I'm happy with the day – onward and upward from here to build into SMX and try to win some races." 450MX teammate Aaron Plessinger powered his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION to the sixth-fastest qualifying time. A P6 finish in Moto 1 was another strong performance for ‘The Cowboy’, despite developing a fever that would ultimately end his weekend early. Together with the team, Plessinger elected to sit out Moto 2 for safety purposes and to prioritize his recovery, currently fifth overall in the point-standings. In 250MX, Tom Vialle qualified sixth overall, before racing to the front of the pack in Moto 1 onboard his KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION. After leading the race during its opening stages, Vialle would eventually claim third, before a fall in Moto 2 saw him eventually claim 21st, resulting in P13 for the weekend. After six rounds, Vialle holds P4 in the championship. Tom Vialle: "Practice and qualifying were good, then I was leading Moto 1 for a while until about six or seven laps to go, where I ended up in third. Overall, my speed was much better there than previous rounds, which was good. Unfortunately, I had a crash at the start of the second moto in turn two. I kind of collided with another rider and I flew off the track, so I'm lucky to be alright. I did what I could to come back to 21st, so we'll get back to training in Florida and come out strong in Millville." Equipped with his KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION, 250MX teammate Julien Beaumer qualified in a promising fifth position, before recording a more challenging 16-13 moto scorecard for 16th overall as the series heads to Spring Creek next weekend. Julien Beaumer: “It was another pretty average day for me. Second moto was off to a better start, but then I crashed late and just struggled to get going again.
