Coenen in full control as Red Bull KTM own MXGP German Grand Prix

Red Bull KTM roared into action for the second MXGP weekend in succession. The German Grand Prix was the site of Lucas Coenen’s third victory of the season and the team’s first 1-2 classification of 2026 thanks to Andrea Adamo’s maiden podium appearance with the KTM 450 SX-F.

Highlights and key moments from Teutschenthal:

  • Lucas Coenen extends his advantage in the MXGP World Championship with his third 1-1 scorecard of the year after two muddy, technical and difficult motos at Talkessel
  • Andrea Adamo makes his MXGP podium breakthrough with 7-3 results and his first trophy after just six previous starts in the premier class
  • Sacha Coenen ties on points for MX2 victory and classifies runner-up, earning the red plate from teammate Simon Laengenfelder who takes 5th place in front of his home crowd despite some illness

Talkessel has been the consistent home of the German Grand Prix since the turn of the century. The track promised its usual hardpack, narrow and rutty terrain where starts were a premium and overtaking required even more strategy. The climate was warm and sunny on Saturday but changed significantly for Sunday with rain, mud and slower, heavier conditions. Red Bull KTM looked to extend their streak of at least one podium finish in each class since round one and maintain their status as pacesetters of the MXGP and MX2 standings with the works KTM 450 SX-F and KTM 250 SX-F motorcycles respectively.

The best qualifier on Saturday was Lucas Coenen in 3rd place but the Belgian was followed by teammate Andrea Adamo in a decent 5th for the MXGP Heat. Sacha Coenen and Simon Laengenfelder were 6th and 8th in MX2.

The rain was sporadic on Sunday but the downpours overnight had already changed the track considerably compared to Saturday. Lucas began brightly in both 30 minute and 2 lap motos and led every single lap on the day. The 19-year-old’s speed and faultless riding ensured a dominant sweep of the results sheets. Andrea Adamo rode to 7th and 3rd only six days after recording 6th position in France for his second-highest classification of the season. The Italian’s excellent second moto launch saw the Red Bull KTM’s run 1-2. The former MX2 world champ motored to a steady P3 to earn his podium berth.

Lucas tops the points table by 31 over the next nearest rider while Andrea is 9th.

In MX2 Simon Laengenfelder, wearing the red plate as MX2 championship leader in front of his home fans for the second year in a row, was feeling under the weather and couldn’t match his teammate’s starting power out of the gate. Sacha Coenen was peerless gate-to-flag in the first moto for his fourth race win of the term. The Belgian made a small mistake while leading on the opening lap of the second moto and although he recovered to rank P2 he missed out on his second overall success of 2026. Compensation arrived with delivery of Simon’s red plate as Sacha’s superior score moved him to the peak of the standings.

Laengenfelder made two errors in the first moto that cast him down to 8th. He was able to rally to 3rd in the second race to secure 5th overall. He now needs to close a three-point deficit to Sacha.

The EMX250 European Championship returned for round 5 of 12. The class was won by Jake Cannon in Germany but Gabriel SS24 KTM’s Gyan Doensen clinched his first podium result. The Dutch youngster was 2nd overall on the KTM 250 SX-F with a 2-5.

The third event of the ‘triple header’ is the Grand Prix of Latvia, taking place at Kegums next weekend and a fast, shallow sandy meeting ahead for the MXGP series.

Lucas Coenen, 1st and 1st for 1st overall in MXGP: “A good weekend. Two holeshots and led every lap. I managed to pull a gap and control it. On that type of track you can easily made a mistake so I had to stay calm…but it was tricky! I had some pressure…but I think I did a good job. Sacha also, and it’s a nice thing to have two red plates [in the family] but it’s a long season.”

Andrea Adamo, 7th and 3rd for 2nd overall in MXGP: “Amazing. My first podium in my rookie season. There are many fast guys, many world champions and world titles. The line between 3rd and P10 is really thin. I didn’t have the best first moto. My feeling was good but I had a crash. P9 then to P7 was OK but I thought the podium had gone. Anything can happen though! A great start in the second moto and then, for me, following is almost easier than leading at the moment because I could learn quite a lot. I managed P3, and I’m really happy.”

Sacha Coenen, 1st and 2nd for 2nd overall in MX2: I’m quite happy to have the red plate! I made two good starts, two holeshots, and led every lap in the first. The second moto was a bit different. I lost the front on the start straight and had to come back from 3rd. It was difficult to pass and I was bit disappointed. Two brothers having red plates on the same weekend is nice! I’m just going weekend by weekend.”

Simon Laengenfelder, 8th and 3rd for 5th overall in MX2: “Not the best weekend but considering all the conditions and my sickness I’m happy to bring home a 3rd place and make a good start in that second moto. Super-happy to be fighting again in the top three. Now it’s time to relax a bit and get the energy back for Latvia.”
