The third and fourth rounds of the Fanatec GT2 European Series took place at the Hockenheimring in Germany in changeable weather conditions and therefore particularly difficult track conditions. At the traditional Motodrom in Baden, three KTM teams with no less than five KTM X-BOW GT2 race cars were once again on the grid in the Pro-AM and AM classes against strong competition from Audi, Lamborghini and Porsche.
The first race on Saturday morning was started as a "wet race", a great challenge for the teams, who had to let the AM drivers start in this first race in the case of Pro-AM pairings. Accordingly, the teams came through the first half of the race in different ways, which was characterised by numerous spins and close duels, but also by a safety car period. True Racing driver Sehdi Sarmini had lost control of his KTM X-BOW GT2 when braking on a wet spot and crashed hard into the concrete wall – fortunately, the driver remained completely uninjured. However, the weekend was over for Sarmini and his team mate Stefan Rosina, the car could not be repaired in the short time available.
On the other hand, the second Pro-AM pairing in a KTM X-BOW GT2 caused a sensation: Rupert Atzberger and Peter Kox (Team Reiter Engineering) worked their way to the front almost through the entire field after a spin by Atzberger and ended up with an outstanding second place overall and second place in the Pro-AM. In the AM classification, the KTM teams were able to score a lot of points for the overall standings, as they did in Monza: Hans-Joachim "Strietzel" Stuck and Kris Rosenberger secured second place despite a spectacular hit by a Lamborghini. Directly behind them, the Sportec Motorsport team crossed the finish line in third place, Christoph Ulrich was successful with new teammate Christoph Lenz. Hubert Trunkenpolz/Klaus Angerhofer (Team True Racing) also scored points and finished fourth.
The second race followed soon, more precisely on early Saturday afternoon. At noon it had rained again, so the teams had to start with rain tyres, but at the pit stops they changed to slicks due to the rapidly drying track. Once again, the duo Atzberger/Kox had the best chance of a top position in the overall standings, but they were robbed of all their chances by a questionable drive-through penalty. On the other hand, the KTM X-BOW GT2 AM teams were able to show off, having put themselves in a good position for the second half of the race with solid first halves and quick pit stops.
Racing legend "Strietzel" Stuck and his rally-proven teammate Kris Rosenberger drove an extremely strong race for Reiter Engineering, which was rewarded in the end with fourth place overall and victory in the AM classification. Once again, the Sportec team around Christoph Ulrich presented itself extremely fast, taking second place with namesake Christoph Lenz and thus securing Ulrichs lead in the overall AM standings. Third place went to the duo Hubert Trunkenpolz/Klaus Angerhofer, who now hold third place in the AM overall standings behind Ulrich and Stuck/Rosenberger.
Contrary to the original plans, the next round of the GT2 European Series will not be held at Silverstone, but will take the teams to Italy, more precisely to Misano, where the Fanatec GT World Challenge Sprint will be held from 2 to 4 June 2021.
