Engine & Exhaust

The 450cc engine is the ultimate powerhouse when it comes to KTM's competitive motocross range. Significantly reworked for 2019, it features even more compact dimensions and reduced weight. It is fitted with a newly designed, extremely compact single overhead camshaft cylinder head and the latest electronic fuel injection. This enables the impressive 63hp to be distributed extremely efficiently throughout the rev range. Even with its super-beneficial electric starter this model is still the lightest 450 engine on the MX market.

…The 450 SX-F is fitted with a newly developed SOHC (single overhead camshaft) cylinder head which is much more compact, 15 mm lower and 500 gr lighter. The changes have further improved mass centralization, elevating handling to new levels of excellence. The new overhead camshaft is also closer to the center of gravity and features an improved surface and shorter valve timing for improved responsiveness. The four ultra-lightweight titanium valves (intake 40 mm, exhaust 33 mm) are activated via extremely rigid rocker arms. The rockers on intake side are DLC coated, allowing for impressive engine speeds up to 11,500 rpm. New low-friction chain guides have also been added to further support the increased engine levels. The new head configuration guarantees the most efficient delivery of the unrivalled power, keeping a strong edge over the competition.

Crankshaft

…The KTM 450 SX-F's crankshaft is located in an ideal position close to the center of gravity, contributing to better mass centralization. It utilizes a short connecting rod, which allows for a compact motor design and a snappier power delivery. The whole unit is extremely well-balanced, with the perfect amount of inertia for optimal traction and ride-ability. A plain big end bearing with two force-fitted bearing shells, runs directly on the crank pin, with the necessary oil feed for this bearing supplied by the engine's pressure lubrication. This design also enhances durability, allowing for long crankshaft service intervals - resulting in less effort and cost and more time spent on two wheels.

Crankcases and engine covers

…The compact engine cases are manufactured using a high pressure die-cast production process that helps with weight reduction, while retaining strength and durability. The design allows for optimal shaft arrangements close to the center of gravity, resulting in better mass centralization and easier ride-ability. Plus, the new engine covers feature a smart surface structure that reduces wear caused by the rider's boots, keeping them looking as fresh as the day you bought it.

Rekluse EXP 3.0 centrifugal force clutch kit

…The latest generation of the Rekluse automatic clutch featuring EXP technology. This automatic clutch is installed into the standard clutch, i.e. simple, uncomplicated and quick installation. The benefits: Easily adjusted from the outside via the clutch slave cylinder, so removal of the clutch cover or dismantling of the clutch is no longer necessary No stalling of the engine in critical situations such as braking into corners, on descents, mid-jump, when starting or pushing The improved traction can be controlled perfectly and smoothly via the throttle twist grip alone Slippery, extremely steep sections can therefore be conquered more easily (saving time and ensuring faster lap times) More relaxed, fatigue-free and controlled riding, even over longer distances in tough terrain Unrestricted and total concentration on the perfect line Use of clutch lever is not required, although it is still possible. Special hand brake lever kit available, allowing braking of the rear wheel with the left hand. Tested and approved by our experienced enduro factory riders.

…Maintaining the optimal engine temperature is crucial to ensuring consistent horsepower throughout the ride. The KTM 450 SX-F features newly designed radiators which are mounted 12 mm lower than the predecessors. This lowers the center of gravity and matches the design of the new shrouds perfectly, in order to achieve perfect ergonomics. By using CFD technology (computational fluid dynamics) together with a clever coolant circuit routing, the innovative system ensures the optimum engine temperature for the highest performance, no matter what the conditions. The radiators also feature special protectors that don't only serve as protection from flying rocks and debris but also as a brace that disperses energy around the radiators in the event of an impact.

…Indispensable in extreme conditions, this fan ensures more air, better cooling and maximum performance. It's in your own hands: The digital control allows you to adjust the switch-on temperature to the present conditions and to read off the current temperature at any time. The switch-on temperature can be set anywhere between 65°C and 95°C. The switch-off temperature is set automatically, and is always 1°C below the switch-on temperature.For installation on all models, you will need the auxiliary wiring harness 77711979000; for additional switching, the Y-distributor 77711979044 can also be installed.

…When it comes to improved power delivery and performance, the new exhaust on all 4-stroke models play a key role and packs a punch that is hard to beat. It features a new, model specific header pipe with a further advanced resonator called FDH (Flow Design Header), which is a small chamber around the pipe. The silencer has a new profile aluminium sleeve and a new end cap, as well as a reworked internal design. The new shape allows the exhaust to be disassembled without removing the shock absorber and also provides better access to the shock. Another benefit of the new shape is slimmer ergonomics, making the bike feel narrower, without compromise to regulatory noise limits.
