CONTINENTAL DRIFT – LONDON TO SYDNEY WITH THE 690 ENDURO R

published at 02.08.2012 / created by David Darcy (rider)

An epic 25,000-mile motorcycle ride from London to Sydney by two ordinary men looking for adventure began on Sunday (July 1) from British KTM dealer. After the first of three month they are close to the Chinese border in the beautiful Kyrgyzstan.

Using two KTM 690 Enduro R's supplied by the Hemel Hempstead-based KTM dealer, British fire fighter Darren Higginson, 47, and Australian policeman, David ‘Dave’ Darcy, 51, aim to achieve the incredible London to Sydney ‘Continental Drift’ ride in just three months!

The idea for the ambitious trip came about when Darren watched riding videos made by David on YouTube three years ago. Darren, who at that stage had only ever ridden road bikes, was inspired by the stunning scenery and spirit of adventure of Dave’s Australian films and made contact with the amateur filmmaker. Within a few months and an invitation to go out riding with David, Darren was on a plane to Australia and a friendship was struck.

Report from Kyrgyzstan
With ninety percent of it's land surface covered in either mountains, lakes or glaciers, Darren and Dave of Continental Drift (2 guys riding 2012 KTM 690 Enduro R's from London to Sydney) always thought Kyrgyzstan would be a great place for adventure motorcycling but they didn't realise just how good it would be. "Kyrgyyzstan has just blown us away. Adventure motorcycling here is just fantastic."

The most spectacular campsite for the trip so far was at the stunning Lake Song Kol that lies between two mountain ranges. "The lake is nestled in a valley at 3000 metres. It is a very large grassland area and the nomadic herders, who live in Yurts, bring their horses and goats there to fatten during summer." The herdsman have a great sense of humour and love the bikes.

The 690's have really proved themselves to be the ideal choice for this adventure. They are a versatile dual sporter with a strong dirt orientation which has really been apreciated in the slippery gravel of Kyrgyzstan. They've got the power to blast up the steep mountain passes and the outstanding handling to take on the steep descents safely and confidently. These bikes can get you to places you wouldn't dream of going on the bigger adventure bikes.

Darren and Dave are just 180 kilometres from the Chinese border and are looking forward to visiting Base Camp of Mount Everest.
