MID-RACE RAIN HALTS ROUND 2 OF KTM EUROPEAN JUNIOR CUP
The second round of the KTM European Junior Cup, which runs as part of the World Superbike Championships was scrapped mid way through the race because of persistent rain on the Monza circuit on Sunday.
The race had already been rescheduled from earlier in the day but with the threat of further rain, a full grid of young talent from 12 countries lined up determined to put on a good show to the loyal Italian crowd. Round 1 winner Adrian Pasek was on pole and was joined on the front row by New Zealand’s Jake Lewis, Britain’s Josh Harland and Spaniard Gaston Garcia.
As the lights went out for the reduced 6-lap race it was French rider Jean-Francois Demoulin who took the hole shot and set about opening a lead at the front of the field. Jamie Patterson made a strong start and grabbed lead at the end of the opening lap into the parabolic turn only to have the Frenchman hit straight back as the riders passed the start and finish line. All indications were that the race would be exciting even though much short of the original distance. A six-rider pack including all the front row contenders had made the break from the rest as they reached the half way mark in what was shaping up to be a great battle for the podium places.
As the riders started lap 3 the rain the skies opened and although the leaders showed no signs of slowing, organizers stopped the race and declared the weather conditions too dangerous to continue.
While only two laps had been completed, the race was canceled and no points were awarded but organizers did award the trophies to the first three across the line. “We did this in the spirit of the competition and because the riders were brave to go out in these conditions,” said Simon Raynor. He added there would be a double race scheduled later in the season to make up the points. All riders in the junior competition compete on KTM 690 Duke bikes.
First three across the line who received the prizes were Jamie Patterson of Britain, Jean-Francois Demoulin of France and Gaston Garcia of Spain.
The next round of the series will be held in Misano on June 10th, 2012.
