HANIKA TAKES SOLID VICTORY IN SECOND RACES AT RED BULL ROOKIES CUP AT AUSTIN
Karel Hanika signaled his intentions to be a major player in the 2013 Red Bull Rookies MotoGP Cup on Sunday with an impressive win in Round 2 on the Circuit of The Americas in Austin Texas.
Karel Hanika came out on top at the dramatic end of a shortened race, fending off attacks from Italian Manuel Pagliani and Toprak Razgatlıoğlu of Turkey to take the prize. The Czech rider comes away from his race weekend in the US leading the points table after his second place in Saturday, Round 1.
Saturday’s winner Bradley Ray of Britain was up with the front trio but was fourth across the line after and acrobatic recovery on his KTM RC250 RB rookies bike after being clipped by Diego Perez with three laps to go. The race incident allowed Hanika to make a break but he still had to deal with Razgatlıoğlu, the third placed rider from Saturday’s opener, and the Italian Pagliani, like the Turkish teenager, a newcomer to this competition for tomorrow’s racing stars.
In the final shakeout it was Hanika, the Rookies ‘veteran’ of several seasons in front of the two newcomers with the Italian and the Turk taking the minor places after what was two impressive rides. All riders in the competition are on the new KTM 250 4-stroke machine that shares the same KTM genes as the race winning KTM Moto3 machine.
“That really was a tough race,” said Hanika. “I enjoyed it a lot more than Saturday, the guys did a lot of work overnight. They checked everyone's front suspension, changed the rear and really worked to give us the set-up that would work for Race 2. It made a big difference, the bike was much more ride-able and I have to thank them a lot for this victory. To Yui Watanabe who crashed today, I wish her a speedy recovery.”
The original race was red flagged after Watanabe, the 16-year-old Japanese girl crashed heavily and needed on track medical assistance. Her mentor, ex GP star Nobby Ueda, later reported that she has a small fracture in her hip, which he said doctors described as ‘not so serious.”
The next races are at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez on May 4th and 5th.
