Erzberg Rodeo and the Red Bull Hare Scramble – words that create a rush of adrenalin and strike fear and excitement into the hearts of all Hard Enduro aficionados. Yes, it’s on again on June 7-10, 2012 – the race to conquer Erzberg – Austria’s notorious “Iron Mountain”
The mountain, with its terrifying profile carved from hundreds of years of mining iron ore will again present the ultimate challenge to professionals and amateurs in this, the 18th edition of one of the world’s toughest offroad events. All 18,000 starting places were snapped up in 49 minutes after entries opened and the tiny Austrian town of Eisenerz is again bracing for the invasion of 40,000 enthusiastic fans.
This year is also the generation change when a new rider will be battling for the Red Bull Hare Scramble honors that have been firmly in the grip of KTM factory rider Taddy Blazusiak for the past five editions. Taddy was discovered by KTM at the Red Bull Hare Scramble and he has gone on to have a huge career in EnduroCross but his commitments in the USA prevent him from racing in 2012. This year David Knight of the KTM Enduro Factory Team has the honor of the number one start plate and will contest the ride on the KTM 300 EXC. Also competing is KTM UK’s talented young rider Jonny Walker who has already tasted the dust and the glory of Erzberg. He finished on the podium in third last year.
And while the Red Bull Hare Scramble is the pinnacle of the weekend, the Erzberg Rodeo is in fact four days of action from Thursday to Sunday. The Kärcher Rocket Ride and the Generali Iron Road Prologue are just a foretaste as riders pit themselves against the cruel slopes of the mountain. In the end it is all about culling the list of 1800 starters from 35 countries down to the 500 who will line up for Sunday’s ‘big one’. Last year just 20 riders completed the challenge within the four-hour limit and organizer Karl Katoch has promised even more daunting challenges in 2012.
For those who prefer to get their thrills vicariously, the Rodeo offers non-stop action in side events, partying and a whole lot of other activities for those who are passionate about extreme motorcycle sports. There is also a freestyle MX show of the FMX4Ever boys on Saturday and a stunt flight by Austrian extreme pilot Hannes Arch will inject extra adrenalin into the atmosphere in the skies over Erzberg on Sunday.
