AUSTRIAN LUKAS WIMMER TOPS EJC PODIUM AT NÜRBURGRING!
Lukas Wimmer of Austria again made his mark on the new KTM European Junior Cup championship to emerge the winner in round seven on Germany’s Nüburgring on Sunday.
Second was Spaniard Gaston Garcia and Polish rider Artur Wielebski secured third. Wimmer now has a 17-point lead over Garcia in the fight for the title, which wraps up in Magny-Cours, France on October 7, 2012. All of these junior riders compete on KTM 690 Duke bikes.
It was Garcia who headed the tightly punched pack into turn one of the race. Wildcard rider Robin Stehr slid out of contention almost immediately but was able to remount and continue as did Jean-Francois Demoulin who also crashed out of the opening lap. Both riders were uninjured.
As the riders completed the opening lap, Wimmer, who started on pole had the the lead with Garcia hot in pursuit but as the laps unfolded the young Austrian extended his lead and left Garcia to fend off a barrage of attacks from all sides for the remainder of the race. Artur Wielebski, Javi Orellana, Christian Vidal and wildcard Kyron De Lange all joined the battle for the final two podium places .
Wimmer went on to be 6.4 seconds clear at the checkered flag for another solid ride from the promising Austrian. Orellana came in at fourth behind Garcia and Wielebski, right on the line. The position was a hard fought battle between him, De Lange and Vidal. Less than half a second covered all five riders as they crossed the line.
Italian Federico Fazzina finished a credible seventh just ahead of Adrian Pasek who was unable to produce the pace that he had in qualifying. Stinius Viking Odegard fought back from a difficult moment early in the race to claim ninth with Szymon Kaczmarek finishing tenth.
