WALKER WINS RED BULL CAMINO DE LA INDEPENDENCIA ENDURO IN COLOMBIA!
Red Bull KTM Extreme Enduro specialist Jonny Walker triumphed in the Red Bull “Camino de la Independencia” Enduro event in Salento Colombia at the weekend, conquering muddy conditions on the mountain slopes to finish ahead of Giacomo Redondi of Italy and Mexico’s Homero Diaz who completed the all-KTM podium.
Jonny Walker, who competed for the first time on the KTM 350 EXC-F machine said that the conditions had suited him perfectly, especially when it started to rain. "There was no rain in the first two laps and I think many of the riders were quite evenly matched but then it started to rain and got very muddy, so it was very similar to what I am used to in the UK,” Walker said.
The competition was made up of a prologue on Saturday and classic Enduro-style laps of 50 km on Sunday over extensive mountain trails at 1,600 meter altitude and often shrouded by fog. Some 400 riders tested their skills over a range of obstacles in the typical Colombian coffee growing countryside that required extreme physical effort. Riders competed in seven different categories.
The Red Bull Camino de la Independencia Enduro retraced the trails used by Simon Bolivar, “El Libertador” in and around Salento in the province of Quindio. Bolivar played a historical role in Latin American history during the struggle for independence from the Spanish in the 1820s.
The event was also a good warm-up for Walker who races in the opening round of the 2013-2014 SuperEnduro season in Liverpool next weekend in front of his hometown fans. KTM has a strong field of factory riders at the event, including Poland's Taddy Blazusiak and Ivan Cervantes of Spain.
