The story behind the radically new 2016 SX range
The extreme physical demands of motocross are like no other - testing strength, endurance, reflexes and courage to the absolute limit. High speeds, unforgiving terrain and massive jumps provide the ultimate challenge and testing ground for both man and machine.
With this in mind, KTM stripped the 2015 bikes down and looked at them in finer detail than had ever been done before – determined to build the ultimate motocross bike.
Some of the greatest minds in MX - DeCoster, Everts, Dungey and Cairoli - all had direct input into the many 2016 model design innovations. All focused on one ambitious goal - to create the lightest, strongest and best performing range of motocross bikes ever.
In total 365 out of 378 parts have been redesigned to be lighter, stronger or more efficient on the 2016 SX fourstroke models compared to 2015.
It doesn’t matter how fast it is - if you can’t hold on to it!
Despite having 4 hp more than any previous 450, the 2016 KTM 450 SX-F is easier to ride and control than previous models. Drastically improved low-range power, a lower center of gravity, refined engine bracing and a new rubberized triple clamp design means it runs smoother, with better traction and less vibration than ever before
The lighter the bike, the easier it is to ‘man-handle’ at race speed.
The new SX-F range drops an unprecedented 4 kg in weight, moving the center of mass lower. A lighter engine design saves more than 1,1 kg, the frame is 980 g lighter than any competitor’s aluminum version plus a new 1 kg lighter battery saves some serious weight. Sleeker and smarter designed plastic panels add to the savings, as do the subframe and swingarm (each 250 g lighter). Every part that could be lightened was - even the spokes were shaved of a few grams each!
A good example of this is the new front number board - eliminating the need for a cable guide all together! New “ S “ shaped radiator fins that improve cooling by 10%, while their fin structure doubles as a radiator brace. Completely new bodywork provides better contact between rider and bike, for easier and more natural movement with better control.
In our quest to build the best performing motocross bike ever, we trimmed away every unnecessary part, material or surface and optimized everything else in fine detail. New one-piece side panels are free of irritating joins, so no chance of hooking boots or pants on it. A revolutionary new “ no-dirt “ self-cleaning footpeg and gear shifter design is stronger and lighter, and unlike other bikes, it won’t trap dirt in even the deepest ruts.
