SILVERSTONE SILVERWARE FOR MACKENZIE AND KTM
Tarran maintains 100% podium record but misses out on championship
Tarran Mackenzie maintained his 100% podium finish record in the British Motostar championship on the Redline Motorcycle KTM, but the championship has been won by season-long rival, Joe Francis.
‘Taz’ – the youngest son of Niall Mackenzie – came to Silverstone with a 36-point deficit in the championship to Francis with only 50 points remaining to be won in the remaining two rounds. Mackenzie was going to have to go all-out while Francis just needed to keep a level head.
Taz immediately showed his pace in first practice to finish in second but was unable to get a clear lap in Saturday’s final qualifying, posting a time that would see him fourth on the grid for Sunday’s 8-lap encounter.
An amazing start saw Tarran get the holeshot, but was soon passed by a couple of riders down the back straight and then again towards the end of the lap. Wilcard rider, Jules Danilo, was making excellent use of his Kalex-KTM machine to take the lead while Taz tried to battle his way back to the front.
The 17-year old from Ashby-de-la-Zouch kept his composure throughout the race, holding off advances from Francis and a perfectly timed overtake on the final lap saw him snatch the final podium place in the Moto3 class behind two other KTM-powered machines.
Despite finishing ahead of the championship leader, Joe Francis scored enough points to clinch the title with one round to go.
A dejected Tarran said after the race: “Well, I tried as hard as I could. I’ve pushed Joe hard all year and he’s done the same with me. But hats off to him, he’s ridden well. We started the season so well with two wins and then coming from the back of the grid at Oulton Park to get second. If it wasn’t for not starting at Knockhill due to a mechanical problem then things might have been different. I will go to the final race at Brands Hatch and try to finish in style and cement second place in the championship.”
Tarran Mackenzie and the Redline Motorcycles team will be in action again at Brands Hatch on October 20 for the final round.
