MACKENZIE MAKING PROGRESS
Tarran and Redline KTM reduce the gap with superb second place
Tarran Mackenzie took the Redline Motorcycles KTM RC 250 R to a thrilling second place finish at Brands Hatch to reduce the championship points margin in the British Motostar championship
The 17-year old has been playing catch-up to championship leader Joe Francis since being unable to start at the Knockhill round. A fighting third place at Snetterton last time out, ‘Taz’ went one better on the Brands Hatch GP circuit, finishing behind fellow KTM rider Joe Irving who took his debut win.
The weekend started off well with Taz in second place after first practice with the youngest son of three-time British Superbike champion, Niall, carrying on his form on the Moto3 machine by taking pole position after Saturday’s two qualifying sessions to lead the grid for Sunday’s 12-lap race.
When the lights went out, Tarran wasn’t able to capitalise on his leading grid position as he settle into third for the hard-fought opening few corners. Demonstrating his usual determination on the bike, Taz pushed back past fellow KTM rider, Jordan Weaving, by the end of the first lap.
By the half way stage, Bradley Ray and Joe Francis had pulled a small gap out front. Taz regrouped and caught them again before making a mistake at Paddock Hill bend, sending him to the back of the leading five.
The remainder of the race was a closely fought battle with the last circuit of the 12-lap encounter an epic one with the lead changes with each corner. KTM rider Joe Irving took the advantage at the last corner with Tarran able to outrun championship rival, Joe Francis, over the line for second place by 0.037 seconds!
Tarran, who also works at Loughborough KTM dealer, Redline Motorcycles, now sits 16 points behind Francis with 6 rounds to go.
Tarran Mackenzie said: “Well, I’m happy with another podium and the race was another tough battle and probably one of the best I’ve ever been in – those last two corners were crazy!
“This is the first time this season that I haven’t won after starting from pole position – so that rule of thumb is out the window. The bike performed excellent again and we’ve managed to claw four points back on Joe Francis.
