HANIKA SEALS RED BULL MOTOGP ROOKIES CUP TITLE IN MISANO!
Czech rider Karel Hanika overcame the disappointment of a DNF in Round 12 of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup race at Misano on Saturday but he still celebrated winning the 2013 cup title. Well placed for a win or a podium finish, a disappointed Hanika exited with a mechanical with a handful of laps to go.
Karel Hanika still bagged the championship with a lead of 65 points with two races in hand. He now goes to Aragon, Spain for the end of the competition in a fortnight’s time to enjoy riding while others fight it out for the minor season’s podium places.
“Of course I wanted to win here but this is what happens sometimes in motorsports. But now I have the championship title so it’s perfect,” Hanika said in the finish area, admitting the highlight of his season had been his win in front of his home fans at the Brno Circuit.
After Hanika made his untimely exit in Misano, the fight was on for the podium places for Round 12 and in a thrilling finish, the three other contenders – two Italians and a Spaniard, went hurtling across the finish line together. Italian fans were delighted that it was Manuel Pagliani who took the win just 0.011 seconds ahead of Stefano Manzi, giving the two top spots to Italian riders. Marco Ramirez of Spain finished third trailing the leader by just 0.045 seconds. It was Pagliani’s first career Rookies race victory.
Heading into the decisive laps, the three riders – four until Hanika was forced to retire – had distanced themselves from the following group by more than five seconds. Fourth home was pole man Enea Bastianini, making it a great day for the Italian riders, with Darryn Binder in fifth. The South African made an impressive charge from the back to be right in the mix after having run off into the gravel at the half way mark.
Going into Round 12, the only rider with a mathematical chance to take the title from Hanika was Spanish rider Jorge Martin. But he had never felt comfortable on the track this weekend and eventually finished back at ninth, putting Hanika in an unbeatable position. Misano was a new circuit for Martin, who last year was unable to ride here because of an injured shoulder.
The two races in Aragon, Spain in two week’s time complete the 14-round series, which is a stepping stone for talented teenage riders to advance to the smaller categories of MotoGP racing. They all compete on the Rookies Cup KTM RC250 RB, single cylinder, liquid-cooled four-stroke bike.
