BSEC WINS FOR KTM UK’S STEVE HOLCOMBE & BRAD FREEMAN
Up-and-coming UK enduro talents Steve Holcombe and Brad Freeman delivered two highly impressive performances at the fourth and fifth rounds of the ACU British Sprint Enduro Championship, held at Llangrove, close to Monmouth. With Holcombe claiming a convincing win in the Under 23 class at each round, Freeman secured an equally impressive double win in the 125cc Youth Cup class.
Described my many as the toughest BSEC event ever, punishing heat and incredibly dry conditions made rounds four and five of the 2013 series challenging for all riders, but didn't stop Steve and Brad from delivering two of the event’s most notable performances.
Fresh from his strong result at the Welsh Two Day Enduro the previous weekend, Holcombe showed that he is not only returning to his best form, but producing the best form of his career to date. Not yet back to full fitness the 250 EXC mounted rider dominated the Under 23 class to finish two minutes ahead of his closest challenger on day one and over three minutes ahead on day two.
The highlight of Steve’s weekend was setting the fastest outright special test time on lap one at round five. Beating numerous world championship regulars, Steve showed that when the time comes and he moves up into the BSEC’s Elite class he’ll be more than ready for the challenge.
Setting times that would have seen him top the Under 19 class as well as the 125cc Youth Cup category on day one, Brad Freeman continued his dominance of the eighth litre class, finishing more than four-and-a-half minutes clear of his nearest rival. Day two saw an equally impressive performance with Brad placing close to five minutes ahead. At round five Brad’s times would have been good enough for eighth in the Elite class with the young midlander never outside the overall top 10.
Tom Sagar ended both rounds four and five as the highest placed KTM rider in the highly-competitive Elite class. Fifth at round four, Tom lost precious time during the opening laps but battled back to place just 16 seconds behind the fourth placed rider. Making a strong start early at round five, a mistake on the fourth lap saw him lose contact with the class leader and Tom ended the day in fifth once again.
The Expert class brought more success for KTM UK supported riders with Richard Ely topping the second day’s competition after placing as runner-up at round four. With the more technical course suiting him at round five, Richard placed 12 seconds ahead of the Expert class runner-up.
Steve Holcombe (KTM 250 EXC): “Day one started well, I think I was about 20 seconds ahead of the second placed rider. I know I could have a good day then. I’m really starting to get to grips with the four-stroke now, and I love the bike. I’m able to ride really smoothly and the times are still coming without having to push too hard. I was only just coming back from injury at the last round of the BSEC, so to have improved so much is great. I had a blinder of a test at the start of round five, and won it overall. I lead overall after the first three laps, so I was really pleased with that. I made a few little mistakes in the afternoon, but my thumb and shoulder felt good. It was a great two days for me.”
Brad Freeman (KTM 125 EXC): “I’m really happy with the way the two rounds have gone. My plan was to try and put in a good first lap each day, which I managed to do, and I just build on my lead from there. The track was tough, but I really enjoyed it. I like riding in dry, dusty conditions and I just got stuck into things. Llangrove is known as a track that has suited bigger bikes, but this year’s track was possibly better suited to smaller bikes. You just had to ride hard, and find good lines, which I think I managed to do. I can wrap the championship up at the next round, so that’s the plan. It’s been a great weekend.”
