ANOTHER PODIUM FOR MACKENZIE
Tarran and Redline KTM continue British Motostar form
Tarran Mackenzie, riding the Redline Motorcycles KTM RC 250 R, made another visit to the British Motostar championship podium at Snetterton on Sunday (July 7).
The 17-year old was desperate to make amends for not being able to start the previous round at his home track in Knockhill and set a blistering pace at the sun-baked Norfolk track during Friday’s practice sessions.
‘Taz’, youngest son of three-time British Superbike champion, Niall, carried on his form on the Moto3 machine into Saturday’s qualifying and placed second on the grid for Sunday’s 12-lap race.
By his own admission, it wasn’t the best of starts as Tarran slotted into fourth at the first corner. But the tenacious rider set about making his way to the front and the race unfolded to be an epic battle between the two other KTM’s of Joe Irving and Jordan Weaving, along with championship leader Joe Francis.
Positions changed at every corner and a hard move from Francis almost sent Taz off track at the halfway mark. After regrouping, Taz clearly had the corner speed but seemed to be outgunned down the long straights of the former airfield. In the final lap, fellow KTM rider and Red Bull Rookie, Jordan Weaving, crashed out unhurt of the lead to make it a drag race to the line with Tarran finishing third behind Joe Francis and Joe Irving.
Tarran, who also works at Loughborough KTM dealer, Redline Motorcycles, now sits 20 points behind Francis with 7 rounds to go.
Tarran Mackenzie said: “The weekend was good in terms of everything running smoothly and super weather. After qualifying I thought Jordan (Weaving) and I would be running away in the race, but both Joe’s pulled their finger out and their bikes were seriously quick. After a bad start I found the pace easy and got to the front, but the race had a lot of passes and hard moves. We just seemed to be hampered on the long straights so I had to make it up everywhere else.
“It wasn’t a bad result with another podium, but it took a lot for me to manage a smile on the podium and I’m always smiling! Still, we’re only 20 points off the lead with half the season to go.”
