AMCA ROUND ONE: PODIUM & RACE WIN FOR PARK LANE IDS KTM
The 2013 AMCA British Championship kicked off this past Sunday (April 7) when the Dursely club ran both MX1 and MX2 classes at Nympsfield, near Stroud.
A new qualifying format greeted the riders and with all the team safely through it was down to business for Shane, Scott and Carl. All riders showed great promise and speed and but for a few unfortunate incidents would have scored even higher overall positions.
Shane worked hard, grabbing two holeshots and securing his first podium overall finish of the year. Scott also battled away, showing he has the speed to be inside the top six with a run of good fortune and some better starts. Carl scored a win in race two, leading home Ben Saunders and was overall leader on the day before falling victim to a rear wheel puncture midway through the final race.
Overall a pleasing day for the team. Lots of positives to take along with areas to work on. Round 2 will be in two weeks time at the Frocester track, also in Gloucestershire.
SHANE HOLMES #7 MX1
6th / 3rd / 5th / 3rd Overall
In race 1 I gated in 15th place and pushed hard all race, eventually finishing 6th at the flag. Race 2 started well as I rounded the first corner in 3rd. I then got into the lead for a few laps, made a couple of mistakes which dropped me to 3rd. Race 3 started with a huge holeshot. I led for a while, made a few mistakes and finished 5th which gave me 3rd overall overall on the day. The team, bike and mechanic worked brilliant all day....thank you to everybody involved.
SCOTT BATES #10 MX1
22nd / 7th / 12th / 12th Overall"Qualifying went well with 5th place in my group! Moto 1 started and after a poor start left me a lot of work to do! Unfortunately a coming together with another rider left me in 22nd! A better start and strong ride passing several riders got me to 7th place in race 2! Got hit off the start left me near last in moto 3 battling through hard past about 20 riders to gain 12th place in the end.
CARL BENJAMIN #8 MX2
3rd / 1st / 18th / 5th Overall
"Qualifying went well. I posted the pole position time in my group which set me up for a good gate pick. Race 1 I gated averagely but made a lot of time up through the first couple of turns pulling up to 8th. I got my head down and worked hard to eventually finish in 3rd position. A good start to the day!
"Race 2 came and I gated in 2nd position but after a few bad line choices on lap 1 I dropped to 4th position. The top 4 were locked in a battle and peeled away from the rest of the field. 1st and 2nd got tangled in a bend which allowed 3rd place and myself to pass them. With a few laps to go I knew this was my opportunity to take my first win of 2013. Locked in a battle with Ben Saunders we swapped positions and after an intense final lap battle I managed to put a solid move in 3 bends from the flag to take the win!
"Going into Race 3 I was lying 1st overall. Needing only a 5th position to take the top step of the podium race 3 looked very promising. I gated in 2nd but was quickly taken out of the race by a rear wheel puncture. Knowing any points were vital I hung on and limped home in 18th. This unfortunately dropped me to 5th in the overall standings. Now I am looking forward to Round 2 at Frocester where I will continue to focus on building points."
