Chilean rider Francisco "Chaleco" López came to rally and the Dakar via a successful racing career in motocross and enduro competition, including being a gold medal winner in the International Six Days Enduro. He first competed in 2007 but did not finish, the Dakar was cancelled in 2008 and in 2009, the first year in South America, Chaleco finished seventh overall.
In 2010 he won three stages and was third overall and in 2011 he finished fourth overall. He had to retire in Stage 7 of the 2012 edition after a crash aggravated an old knee injury. He was then in fourth place overall. He had an excellent Dakar 2013 riding KTM. He won four stages and was third overall behind KTM riders Cyril Despres and Ruben Faria.
Lopez was not so fortunate in the 2014 edition when he was forced to retire in Stage 6 after what had been a grueling first half of the 13-stage marathon.www.chalecolopez.cl Francisco's facebook
