KNIGHTER TAKES WESTON BEACH RACE WELL SUPPORTED BY KTM UK RIDERS
The dunes were high, the competition as wild as ever but nothing that could dampen the fighting spirit of KTM factory Enduro rider David Knight who added yet another victory notch on his belt in the 2011 edition of the UK classic, Weston Beach Race.
The Knighter had to fight for his title and was given a good run by other top KTM UK supported riders Tom Church and Nathan Watson (HM Plant Red Bull KTM) who finished second and fifth.
Organizers of this beach race classic also answered the challenge for something that would have the riders out of their seats and the crowd on the toes and screaming for their heroes. They manipulated 200,000 ton of sand around the beach to construct a course of 38 dunes, some 11 meters high. The rest was up to the 1100 riders who felt ready to attack the grueling three-hour race on the front at Britain’s Weston-Super-Mare.
The battle was epic and it wasn’t all a walkover for the Knighter, who is still working on fitness levels and race practice after double hip surgery put him out for most of the 2011 Enduro World Championship. He was second at the end of the 1.5 mile (2.41 km) straight behind Jamie Lewis while Tom Church had powered his KTM into third. Riders traded the lead back and forth and it was Church who had the advantage at the end of the first hour of the three-hour race. It was Church then Knighter then Church as the two KTM riders juggled the lead and with just 30 minutes to go it looked like Tom might have enough in the tank to pull off an upset win. Then David put the hammer down hard, grabbed back the advantage and from then on nothing stood between him and his sixth Weston Beach title – five solo riders and one quad title.
David Knight: "As I came in the pits for my second stop I was in the lead and I caught back up to Tom after a good stop. He seemed tired, and while I thought my fitness would be bad because of my hips, I pushed in the last hour and got away a little. I knew I had done enough and needed to back off in the last few laps, but I nearly had a couple of big crashes. But yes, the smaller mounds made the track much harder to get away this year, and although I got some cramp, I felt good in the end. It was good to be pushed to the last few laps with Tom, as we lapped up to second. It’s been a good day!”
