VICTORY FOR ALAN TECHER AT RED BULL MOTOGP ROOKIES CUP
French rider Alan Techer climbed on top of the box for the first time on Sunday when he emerged winner of the second of two races in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at Germany’s Sachsenring. He headed home two German riders, Florian Alt and Willi Albert, on the podium for the first time in his debut season.
Sunday’s race was a typical hard fought event with no less than 10 of the young riders battling it out for the lead. Unluckiest rider of the weekend was Australian Arthur Sissis who was out of the points in both races this weekend after technical problems on Saturday and a last lap crash on Sunday when he clipped the back of Alt’s bike. He now relinquishes his lead in the championship to rival Lorenzo Baldassarri of Italy, who finished in a solid fourth.
While the German riders were able to sport the home advantage, this weekend was the first time that Techer had ridden on the Sachsenring as last season he was injured for this round. He said he had been disappointed not to be on the podium on Saturday but was thrilled to have made it on Sunday. “I had trouble with the bike yesterday the rear was sliding too much. But I realized it wasn't the bike it was me, I just wasn't using the right lines.”
Alt said he didn’t make a good start but when he realized he was in the leading group he decided to stay cool, relax and work his way to the front. Hi chances of slipping past Techer were foiled after the incident with Sissis in the closing stages.
Willi Albert was not only on the podium for the first time, but it also his first top 10 finish in this competition that grooms young riders for a career in MotoGP, all of who rider KTM 125s.
Brad Binder, 15 of South African also looked like he was going to place high in the field until he realized his petrol tank had come loose. “That's my fault,” said his father who looks after the bike. “He was riding so well. Still it's great to see him up at the front again this weekend.”
Going into the last three races of the year Baldassarri has a six point lead over Sissis with Techer and Oettl also still in with a mathematical chance of wining the Cup. The next races are at the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic on August 13th and 14th.
