PHILIPP OETTL ON TOP ON THE SACHSENRING
Philipp Oettl put on a superb display to win the first Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup race of the weekend at the Sachsenring. The German rider emerged on top after a typical Rookies Cup skirmish of 12 riders battle that finally saw Brad Binder and Scott Deroue soak up the minor places.
Australian Arthur Sissis, the Cup leader, was forced to go out on his spare bike after experiencing technical problems in the warm-up race and finished out of the points. His rival Lorenzo Baldassarri of Italy picked up 10 points for sixth place and closed the points deficit to Sissis to just seven with four races remaining.
Oettl said it had been a hard fight in the big group of riders. “It was tough because the grip was not that great and the bike was sliding around a lot. When it came to the last lap I just went as hard as I could in the hope of opening up a little bit of a gap before the last corners,” he said. Oettl set the fastest lap of the race in the final minutes and took the checkered flag three tenths of a second ahead of Binder.
It was the third time Binder had finished second at the Sachsenring. “I certainly want to change that tomorrow but it was a great race and I am so happy to be back on the podium,” he said. Riders compete also on Sunday on the same program as the MotoGP of Germany.
It was also a big day for the Dutch teenager Deroue who was on the podium for the first time. Alan Techer of France was fourth and Tomas Vavrous of the Czech Republic was fifth.
