DEROUE WINS DRAMATIC ROUND 11 AT SILVERSTONE!
Dutch rider Scott Deroue emerged the winner in Round 11 of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at the Silverstone circuit in Britain on Sunday after a string of race incidents in the final corners saw some of the race’s main contenders exit in the closing seconds.
Second was Spanish rider Joan Mir, who on Sunday celebrated his 16th birthday and third place went to Marcos Ramirez, also of Spain, who pulled off his second podium for the weekend.
Just as he did in 2012, Scott Deroue has gained in strength and performance as the season went on and he was a strong rider in Saturday’s race, even if he did crash in the final stages.
But the big loser was certainly points leader Karel Hanika of the Czech Republic, who had picked up yet another a solid win on Saturday. Hanika has been the stand out Red Bull rookie in 2013 and with three rounds still to go he only needed to finish in front of Jorge Martin of Spain to take the cup title.
He was perfectly placed in a group of hungry riders to do just that when the competitor riding beside him had a moment, wobbled and knocked Hanika off his KTM RC250 RB bike. Almost simultaneously, a number of other riders went down in quick succession, including American Joe Roberts who had been leading going into the final corners and Hanika’s rival Martin, the only competitor left with a mathematical chance of keeping the championship alive.
With Hanika in the gravel, but fortunately not hurt, and Martin also on the bitumen, the Czech rider was, for a few seconds, the Cup winner. But while the distressed and disappointed Hanika had to retire from the race, Martin was still able to pick up his bike and cruise to the line in twelfth place. The Spanish rider picked up the necessary point to keep himself in the running.
Hanika’s next chance will be at the next (single) round at the MotoGP weekend of San Marino where these young riders will fight it out on the Misano circuit on September 14. The season concludes with two more races in Aragon Spain.
