ORELLANA TAKES HOME WIN IN SPECTACULAR KTM EJC RACE AT ARAGON WSBK

Majorcan Javier Orellana became the fourth winner in four races of the 2012 KTM European Junior Cup, beating young Austrian Lukas Wimmer by a mere four hundredths of a second after a titanic race long battle at the Motorland Aragon World Superbike round.
Orellana had been fast in qualifying and the lap sector times showed that although Wimmer had set pole position he would need to make an early break from Orellana, the youngest rider in the series, to be able to establish a lead.
At first it seemed this would be the case as Wimmer led from the race start into Aragon’s sinuous uphill section. However a small mistake under braking into turn 12 allowed Orellana to close the gap and then pass Wimmer into the hairpin at the end of Aragon’s enormous straight. This set the standard for the entire race and at the final lap it seemed clear that whoever exited the hairpin first would take the win.
Despite Orellana setting the fastest lap of the race in a bid to chase the Austrian down, Wimmer still lead on the straight and seemed to have established enough of a gap to be safe into the braking zone. Orellana was not prepared to give up though and went for the pass, only to run wide. Undeterred he carried tremendous corner speed through the final turns and was able to use the Austrians slipstream to pass for a popular home win.
Third and fourth places also went to Spanish riders as Barcelona’s Gaston Garcia triumphed after a titanic race long battle with Christian Vidal, both riders again separated by only fractions of a second at the line.
Orellana’s win means he now leads the championship from Wimmer by one point, with only eleven points covering the top four riders as the series heads to the next round at the Czech Republic’s legendary Brno circuit.
