SCOTT DEROUE TAKES DOUBLE RED BULL MOTOGP ROOKIES CUP WIN IN ESTORIL

published at 06.05.2012 / created by Marcia Hill

Dutch rider Scott Deroue scored a sensational double win at the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril to lead the Red Bull MotoGP Cup points table after four of the 15 races.

The 16 year old on Sunday put in a duplicate performance to take the fourth round of the series when he came out of the final corner to slip past Germany’s Philipp Oettl and take the honors. Karel Hanika of the Czech Republic picked up his second podium third for the weekend.

Scott Deroue: “I went wide into the chicane on the last lap so no one could get past and then I had a good line through the last corners behind Philipp and I knew I could get him before the line.”

Oettl said he was happy to be back on the podium after a difficult start to the Rookies season as he has experienced some difficulties making the switch between the KTM 125 Rookies bike and the KTM Moto3 4-stroke he rides in the Spanish Championship. “Today I got away with the group and that made the difference. It is a great feeling to be up here again. I really thought I had it won out of the last corner but then I saw Scotty out of the corner of my eye.”

Germany’s Florian Alt, who finished second on Saturday crashed with four laps to go after a wicked almost-high-side that led into a brush with Hanika. Up to then Alt had done much of the leading just as he did on Saturday.

Hanika was happy to be third again. “I changed my seating position a bit from yesterday and that made things better on the straights,” he said. He was up with the leaders until his encounter with Alt, who now slips from first to third in the standings. It was also an unlucky day for local rider Ivo Lopes. The home town hero failed to score after being brought down in the lead pack when 14 year old Briton Bradley Ray touched the front of his bike while on the brakes.

Races 5 and 6 of the 2012 Red Bull Rookies Cup are at Silverstone on June 16th and 17th.
