HOME WIN FOR BENDSNEYDER IN RD. 5 OF RED BULL MOTOGP ROOKIES CUP IN ASSEN

Pole man Bo Bendsneyder was at the top of his game on Saturday at Round 5 of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup putting in a winning performance on what was his home circuit in Assen.
The young Dutch rider was a major player for the entire 16-lap race, the second of a double header at the classic TT circuit. The fastest qualifier on Thursday, Bo Bendsneyder finished a strong fourth in Friday’s race. He then wound up his weekend with an excellent two-way battle with championship leader Jorge Martin of Spain to be the stand out rider in Saturday’s Round 5.
Bendsneyder said he had tried to push in every lap of Saturday’s race. “I had a great battle with Jorge (Martin). I thought he would pass me in the last lap. I braked late and then I saw he wasn’t there and I went on to win.”
In fact, Martin had been tucked in behind Bendsneyder going into the closing stages of the race but got held up by a lapped rider. He also did not get the start he wanted when the race go underway.
“I had a bad start but I was able to improve quickly”, Martin said. “I tried to push when I was in front but then I got stuck behind Bo. I tried to study him to see where I could make the pass in the last lap but then I got stuck behind a lapped rider and Bo got away from me.”
Martin was second behind Soushi Mihara of Japan in Friday’s race so adds impressive points to his championship lead after the weekend at the Dutch circuit. Second last season to Czech rider Karel Hanika, who now rides for the Red Bull KTM Ajo factory team in Moto3, Martin already has a 23-point lead over Mihara in the championship with nine rounds still to go.
Italy’s Stefano Manzi came out best in the tight battle for the third podium place, where six riders fought it out right down to the line. Manzi had crashed out in Friday’s rain-soaked Round 4, one of a number of non- finishers in what were very difficult race conditions. Australian Olly Simpson and Mihara pushed Manzi to the limit as they went almost three abreast to the finish line but the Italian sealed third place.
It was also a good weekend for British teenager Bradley Ray who picked up a 3-6 result in the double header.
Next Round: July 12-13, 2014 – Sachsenring, GER (Round 6 & 7)
