While the title had already gone to Toni Cairoli, who joins Max in the KTM factory line-up for MX1 next season, there was still much at stake for the German rider with several other contenders also after the glory of second place. He managed to finish second in the first moto then took a cautious no risks approach in the second to make sure he achieved his goal.
Max Nagl: I am very happy to finish second in the MX1 title,” he said. “It’s my best career result so far. I had a great start in the first heat but Desalle got past me. He’s been very strong lately and I didn’t want to make any mistakes that might have spoiled my chances. I only had to go for two more points after my good result in race one. I had a good start again and it was my ain to finish on the podium. This result was even better than I expected but I have a great bike and a great team and that really helps a lot. Now I’ll concentrate on the MX of nations coming up soon. We have a very good national team and it’s my goal to finish well there.”
Rain that had been deluging the host region during the week was in fact so heavy on Saturday that organizers decided to cancel practice and qualifying and preserve the track for Sunday’s GP. It was a sound move even though it only allowed the riders a brief period of on track time on Sunday morning to get to know the circuit. The rain ceased and the hard pack track dried out in time for the spectacular crowd of some 20,000 to enjoy a day of high quality competition.
