What happens if...
...someone arrives at the scene of an accident and finds a biker who has had a crash and doesn’t move any longer or if the partner has crashed during a motorcycle trip? Maybe he/she is even unconscious, what to do then?

First of all the helmet needs to be removed. But be extremely careful! Because “in such a case one never knows if the spine or the head is damaged,” explains Ralph Pariasek, doctor for KTM, “Each movement, each action one takes needs to be exercised with extreme care. The spine reacts especially sensitive. Therefore one needs to learn how to act the proper way. It is best if a second person helps to remove the helmet. For that the hurting person needs to lie on his back.”

This is what you will have to do:
At first you need to open the visor and chin strap. If he wears glasses these need to be taken off as well. One of the helpers needs to kneel above the helmet and hold on to the lower jaw and the lower edge of the helmet. Then he needs to very easily and carefully (!) pull the head lengthwise. Now it is time for the second person to fulfill his task.

He kneels at one side of the lying person. He opens the straps of the helmet and pushes his hands from the lower opening into the interior of the now open helmet. “Both thumbs should hold the chin in place,” explains Ralph Pariasek, “The fingers push underneath the back of the head and stabilize it. Now the head lies in the hands of the helper who can’t and shouldn’t move at all.”

While the second helper holds the head in place possibly without any further movement the first one can slowly pull the helmet towards himself and off the lying person’s head. But it is important as Pariasek, the KTM Rally doctor, stresses again, “The spine shouldn’t move at all.”

After working this difficult task one should wait for the – hopefully – already called rescue service. The head should still be held in place until the crew gets to the scene.
